A Nick Love movie is so stuffed with testosterone that it's a wonder the DVDs don't have testicles. So it's no surprise that the filmmaker has tackled The Sweeney – that most manly of 1970s cop shows – for his latest feature.
And the film kicks off as only a Nick Love movie can – with Ray Winstone subduing a man with a baseball bat while bellowing the wonderfully Winstonian, "We're the Sweeney sh*t-head. And you're nicked."
Shakespeare it ain't but, Love's back catalogue – which includes The Business, The Football Factory and Outlaw – isn't about intricate plots, clever dialogue, and subtle performances. It's about men committing acts of violence while shouting swear-words at other men, and on that front, The Sweeney is a resounding success.
