| Twitition – The One Direction to Social Media Fame! Posted: 13 Sep 2012 05:51 AM PDT One Direction are one of only a small amount of UK acts to really break America. Following in the footsteps of musical greats such as The Beatles and Coldplay, 1D fever seems to have been contracted by the teenage population of our neighbours across the pond; but what's the magic formula? It seems the definitive answer is a shrewdly strategised and sharply executed social media campaign; masterminded by their marketing team. One fifth of the teen band, Liam, 18, told The Mirror’s website last year: "Twitter has been a major factor in getting our name out there. Just as Twitter has gone up, so we have, too. They've gone hand-in-hand. "And, picture-wise, Tumblr has helped us a lot. It has really accelerated our success." Band mate, Niall (who turned 19 today – the 13th of September!) added: "If you ask American fans where they found out about us it's always Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Facebook… it's the most powerful thing we have." These sentiments were concurred by the chief of One Direction's record label, Takhar: "Social media has become the new radio – it has never broken an act globally like this before." So with this in mind, it is really encouraging to see that America's favourite British boys are using Twitition as a tool in their social media campaign. Their latest campaign comprises of 25 Twititions in total, where One Direction beseeches the power of decision onto their fans themselves! The News section of their website, explains the rules: "Are you ready to Bring 1D to your city? Click on your city below and sign the Twitition to get started. We'll choose the top 10 Twititions with the most votes to move on to the next round. The city with the most votes will also get 50 points to start. If you don't see your city listed below, click on the city closest to you. The deadline to participate is Thursday Sept 13th at 11:59 PM EST. We'll announce the results and the first challenge on Friday, September 14th". Currently, Dallas Texas seems to home the biggest 1D fan base with a massive 6853 signatures on the Twitition 'Bring 1D to Dallas', with New York and LA coming in as a close second and third with 6389 and 3720 votes on their Twititions respectively (numbers correct 12.00 pm 13.9.12). The Twititions are only live until 12am tonight and it looks set to be a nail biting end! All in all, the audience engagement from the campaign seems to have given the band another push in its mission towards becoming the USA's ultimate sweethearts, and not only does this strategy give a massive amount of publicity to the band in the USA; it gives marketers a clear idea of where the band's fan base lies and what geographical areas should be targeted for further saturation. |
| The iPhone 5 release; is it enough to give Apple your money? Posted: 13 Sep 2012 03:26 AM PDT Well, it’s finally here; the long awaited iPhone 5; not the ‘new iPhone’; the iPhone 5. There was quite a bit of speculation over the name of the product, since the launch of the ‘new iPad’, however Apple has decided to keep the number in naming this one. The device itself as you can see in the picture above, is exactly how it was rumoured to look. Its glass and aluminium shell means this phone should be a little more shatterproof and robust than the previous version. Still available in the white and black colours like the last several versions of the phone, it's a fresh take on the classic bestselling phone. The new A6 processor will also make the phone very snappy. Many of the rumours surrounding the actual hardware in the phone turned out to be true too. It is now sporting the 4-inch display, as well as the new smaller dock connector which Apple has named ‘Lightning’ in a ploy to draw more attention to their ‘Thunderbolt’ connector. The actual phone itself; although larger than the previous phone; is actually lighter and thinner, a truly amazing design feat in my opinion. The phone has also been given quite a few updates under the hood, with both GSM and CDMA models supporting the LTE data connection, which, when you can get a connection in your country, will be almost as fast as Wi-Fi. Sadly, no NFC as rumoured in this model; however Apple may still do mobile payments in some other way – I’m sure they won’t stay out of that game for too long. The phone will come with iOS 6 out of the box; which has already been all over the internet for quite a while; but just quickly to recap – better Facebook integration; Passbook; an improved version of Siri, and many more upgrades. The pre-orders for the phone start on the 14th with the device being available in US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore from the 21st, with more countries to follow on the 28th. It’s hard to say if this is a big enough upgrade to draw people away from the lights of the Samsung Galaxy S3, but with so many people wrapped into iTunes and the impressive hardware and software this phone has to offer, it’s unlikely that this won’t be a big hit. |
